Setting Stuff up

Working on the averagevoice.com messageboard and website. So I finished up some of the work on the facebook account for the board and okedda few members on it.

Then I had to re-submit my photo for te photo contest. Next comes looking up on how to develop facebook fan page

Last week a member brought her computer in to the club wanting to clean it up and make it run faster. My first step when doing a job like this is to download and install CCleaner ( http://ccleaner.com ) which is a fantastic tool that gets rid of a bunch of unneeded files and repairs the registry in just a few clicks of the mouse.

So I loaded up the browser to download the file and I didn’t know weather to laugh or cry. The entire top half of the screen was covered with 8 separate toolbars. Yahoo, Google , ALot and a bunch more I didn’t recognize. All these toolbars take away from the amount of screen you have available to actually view the internet page you are on.

Some toolbars take control of aspects of your browser. Some will force you to use their search engine instead of the one you want while others track everything you do. Conflicts with toolbars happen frequently.

A great example of this is just recently people were upset because they could not right click on a image or text to save it to their hard drive. Come to find out that the fault belonged to the Yahoo toolbar that was installed in FireFox browser. Once it was uninstalled everything worked fine.

The point I am trying to make here is that toolbars serve very little purpose. Installing a lot of them (often because they are attached to other software) does more harm than good. Be careful which ones you install.

If you are having problems logging on to the internet or you find your connection is very slow, consider getting rid of some of the more useless toolbars. Also download Ccleaner and run it once a week and you will find your online experience a little faster.

OH MY GOD !!

avitar_me1 folks here is where you lean you should never marry a Mac user.

I have a couple that the wife has a dell and hubby has a mac.

Hubby tells wifey that she doesnt need an antivirus because Road Runner has that taken care of that.

So now I am working on a totally infected machine with no protection.

It took a few hours but was able to get rid of all the bugs. Now their firefox and IE work. All thase toolbars are enough to make you puke. I used winpatrol to get rid of the toolbars, malwarebytes to rid it of malware and installed comodo free antivirus.  There are more things to run but at least I have it running again.

What made it extra fun is that I did this all remotely from my appartment using the free version of logmein.ccom. Now how cool is that?

Ribbon of darkness

avitar_me1 you use office 2007 at work or at home. I do. and I have talked with a lot of people that hate the ribbon across the top with all the new menu options. Well here is a link to a free program that allows you to make it east to access the old interface in the new office.

Now you can sleep at night

Well here I sit. I finally finished with my newsletter.  I have a short list of computer work to do for family friends. I have been maintaining a twitter account. But I have to get into it more. twitter.com/abair01

avitar_me1 just not funny anymore. Over the last few weeks I have been assaulted with computer questions. I had people who were infected with the Konflicker worm, one I fixed the other I just told the owner to ask someone else. Not to be mean but I offered her the software to get rid of it and instead to the word of a walmart employee who told her to have a “real pro” fix it. -I hope the her wallet stings for a long time on that one.

I had web pages of my own vansish through my ow mistakes and go figure it was right when I started getting people to view them. I think this weekend I will be going over every page to insure accuracy. Am also going to consider switching them over to a more CSS friendly style.

Right now I am working on 3 computers from one customer with all sorts of issues, so stay tuned for those.

A lot has been going on from the state level of our governer wanting to lay off 9K state worker mainly in the MH feild to a recent rash of suicide at Schenectady Highschool.

I am hoping that many of the articles for this months Reach Out are focused

April Retch Out is UP
